world heritage site VÖLKLINGER HÜTTE

Around an hour from Trier, the Völklingen Hütte World Heritage Site is the only fully preserved ironworks from the heyday of industrialisation and the first monument from this era to be included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The huge halls, open spaces and the intriguing maze of pipe systems now provide a unique venue for international exhibitions, festivals and concerts. Culture is complemented by nature: the paradise that emerged from the former ‘hell’ of the coking plant fascinates visitors with the reclaiming of parts of the site by diverse flora and fauna. The history of industrialisation with its achievements and its dark sides, technology, culture, art and nature combine to create a unique experience and characterise the Völklinger Hütte World Heritage Site as a place of history, present and future that is constantly reinventing itself.
